Although, when it comes to the next decade, computing will probably not change radically, in the long term, we examine how some technology in their infancy will bring about major changes, transforming or lives that will happen within the second half of the century.
As a matter of fact, rudimentary mind interface machines already exist today but they are slow, expensive, require surgery and require burdensome equipment. Gradually throughout the century, first helping handicaped people integrate within society, then adopted by the rich and the geek because they will help enhance our lives, brain/ computer interfaces should be commonplace by the end of the century. Besides, alternatives to surgery such as swallowable interfaces and headgear will make things a breeze.
Mind interfaces or the dawn of telepathy
It may seem like a radical claim now, but it is actually a very logical conclusion stemming from watching the state of existing technology and pushing it slightly further, when it is enhanced and available for the masses: we will all become telepaths and this will happen within the lifetime of the children being born today. What once seemed like out of the realm of fantasy books, science fiction or sorcery will become a routine way to enhance everyone's experience with the world. Unlike movies though, this will happen via mind modems connected to the existing wireless network.
So what is to be expected from these devices? Initially, their goal will be to recognize basic thoughts to control artificial arms/legs or give speech to handicapped people but recognition speeds will improve from currently less than 50 a minute to go closer to natural thought speed (closer to 15,000 words a minute) and maybe beyond (we can sometimes think about more than one thing at the same time in abstract ways that can not be expressed simply in words).
Because these devices can be integrated to a wireless modem, as soon as it is available, there will be a strong interest in sending quick messages to other people. No more keyboards, just think it, it happens. When people send messages like "Hello, I just thought of you.", they will litterally mean it. The same way search engines have made anyone tech savvy able to learn about anything they want, it will be possible to access instant knowledge by simply thinking about a topic. Don't remember details about someone you met a long time ago? our onboard equivalent of outlook will refresh our memory. It will truly be a blessing. No need for computer screens either. Computers could either communicate via audio with through a headset at first or interfacing directly with our neurons, showing us images as large as we want them to be.
Safegard will however have to be built into the system because it is very easy to send very offensive or inappropriate message while the mind is sleeping or distracted and at brain speed... thought wars could get ugly very fast. Also, marketers and governments would love to listen on to our thoughts and try to influence them when we are distracted. We might have to train before we use the device, it may be necessary to add strong privacy controls to avoid invasion of our inner thoughts, there might be constraints and rules of conduct/ laws while using it, but the usefulness of such devices will outweigh the drawbacks because the applications will be endless.
Quantum computing and Quantum telecommunication
Although originally limited in its uses, quantum chips will become more common because there is a wide range of tasks that they might be good for... a lot of them, we will discover only when the chips become available.
Although there are clear laws saying the opposite, I believe through quantum telecommunication we might one day discover a way to communicate faster than light.
claim I will make is that
- quantum computers
- nano computers in body, swallowable/ throwable... need computing swallow for an hour
- continuous health monitoring, vacuum cleaner nanobot avoiding expensive surgery
According to this article http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/04/110406192422.htm, speech is given to people from thought.
